Any good advice for women traveling alone?

Since you ask this question in the Thailand section, I assume that's the country you plan to travel it.

Here's a few pointers.

Keep your valuables (money, passport, tickets etc.) in a money belt on your person, or in the hotel safe. This is good advice for men as well as women. I had a friend who had is fanny pack sliced, and they removed his money and passport.

Don't give out your room number to anyone. There are lots of students who ask tourists to take surveys. If you indulge them one of the questions they'll ask is where you're staying, and what room. I'm not sure the reason for this, but I skip that answer, or just lie.

When taking taxis, make sure they use the meter. If he tries to negotiate a price before hand chances are they're taking advantage of you. The exception is from the airport, and that shouldn't cost more than about 300 baht.

MBK sells pepper spray. MBK is a giant mall in Bangkok (skytrain exit: National Stadium) and they have guys who sell self defense items like pepper spray and stun guns. I'm not sure about the stun gun, but a little pepper spray in your purse might not be a bad idea.

Use common sense. Thailand is actually a pretty safe place. Like every other country on earth they have their share of crime. But if you just use common sense, avoid sketchy neighbor hoods (klong toy market), you should be fine.

Good luck, and enjoy.Any good advice for women traveling alone?

1. don't wear outfits that shows too much of your skins

2. make sure you already have a place to stay and know how to get there from the airport/bus terminal/train terminal or from where ever you came from

3. sometimes though you don't know where to go, don't ask until you see a person that can be trusted to guide you, sometimes just follow the crowds already helps

4. don't put a confused face when you're walking alone

5. before you go, try to gather as much information about the place you want to visit, especially about tourist traps, dangerous area, etc (eg. from: www.virtualtourist.com)

have a safe trip!
If you are a woman and traveling alone, my best advice is not to go to places where there are few people around or if the place looks deserted or quiet. When it's nighttime, it is best to stay in your hotel room or if it cant be avoided, try to go in well lighted places and where you can see people around. Wear respectable dress- avoid wearing plunging necklines, tight clothing to show your curvy form, short skirts because you are inviting would be rapist. Always bring your passports or identification card with you. Don't wear/show that you have a lot of jewelries or expensive items with you, because it would attract snatchers or thieves. When you are purchasing items in cash, choose the value with the smallest denomination.(if possible)
Unless you know the country you are going to is safe, stick with a group of people from your own country. I would be careful, as it's possible to draw unwanted attention in Mexico or Canada if you are a woman who travels alone.
When you make hotel reservations ask ahead of time the approximate cost of the taxi ride from the airport to the hotel. Do not tell the taxi driver you have never been in that city before. If you want to take a walk ask the doorman or front desk the safest places to do so. Keep your purse close to your body. Look confident when you walk. If you need to keep cash on you spread it out into 3 different locations. Some purse, some pocket, some hidden. Keep copies of your credit card numbers and the phone number of the companies seperate from the cards themselves, so you can call and cancel if they get stolen.
pick a destination that is safe and easy to get around. hong kong is my favorite destination of the woman traveling alone. this article is great at explaining why.
