stomach the iron supplements that I am taking...my doc has me taking 325 mg of iron/ferrous sulfate 3 times a day and it is really wreaking havoc on my stomach :( I know I have to take them because of recent blood test results but could really use some advice on how to make taking them a little more bearable....thanks in advanceAnyone pregnant women or mommies have any suggestions or advice on how to better?
First things first!
Iron needs Vitamin C to be absorbed by your body, so take your tablets with orange juice, or perhaps blackcurrant - you could eat iron filings and it would not do much good if you are not having enough Vitamin C.
Iron is best absorbed by the body in the morning, so the most valuable tablet will be the one with your breakfast. Make sure you have a good breakfast with perhaps , some porage (good for iron), an egg, wholewheat toast and fruit.
You probably need to up your fibre too, as you risk constipation with that level of iron supplement - ask your doc what he suggests! And do tell him you are having problems - hard enough to be pregnant and anaemic without stomach/bowel/piles problems too ;-)
Best way would be to try to get your blood count up pretty fast by adding to the tablets with a diet rich in Iron and Vitamin C. Easiest iron to absorb is from animal products, like egg yolks, liver (can be pate, etc), red meat. Things like spinach have good levels of iron but are very difficult for your system to use - but every little helps!
Hope this helps.Anyone pregnant women or mommies have any suggestions or advice on how to better?
