Everyone is different so what woman likes and would advise a man to do or say might not be the same as what another woman would enjoy. I think you just have to be yourself when your dating someone, if you have chemistry and are attracted to each other you probably won't need anyones advice.
That's like saying men can't give good advice on dating another guy. All men are different and the same goes for women the type of advice you needed was probably better from a man's perspective.
